“Supernova: Vanessa Veasley”

In Supernova on January 18, 2011 at 7:11 am

The amazing woman featured in this post inspired the genesis of the new Category, Supernova: “Compare nova a star that explodes catastrophically owing to either instabilities following the exhaustion of its nuclear fuel or gravitational collapse following the accretion of matter from an orbiting companion star, becoming for a few days up to one hundred million times brighter than the sun. The expanding shell of debris (the supernova remnant ) creates a nebula that radiates radio waves, X-rays, and light, for hundreds or thousands of years”

I present to you the interview I’m most proud of up to date and will always be in my top 5…  😉

Tell me about your first shoot, who was the photographer & how did you feel?

I’ve been modeling since I was in high-school.  I think my first professional shoot was with Art Murphy here in Philly.  I was nervous but my Mom was there.  This was before the whole digital revolution so there was more pressure to get things right.  I think shooting so much film back then really helped me later on…

What advice would you give to young ladies that are in the beginning stages of pursuing modeling?

I always tell the young ladies that approach me about the glamor/urban modeling industry to go to or stay in school.  The economy is crappy.  Not many girls know how to handle this business.  It’s the wild wild west.  Lawless.  No one respects protocols.  There is no union.  There are no standard rates.  We deal with all the negatives of celebrity with very few of the benefits.  I think all women should have at least one sexy professional photo shoot in their lifetime so when you’re old and your boobs are at your knees you have evidence of how hot you were. But aspiring models should cultivate their other talents these days.  If you can act, write, etc.  Focus on that.  If you still have your heart set on modeling, concentrate on the fashion, commercial if you fit the requirements and get with a reputable agency.

What are 3 facts about you that most people don’t know?

I hate mushrooms

I’m ambidextrous

I was bitten by a black widow spider

What is your secret weakness or guilty pleasure?

Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia. I can’t even keep it in the house. I’ll devour a whole pint in a couple hours. (memecherry note: I Feel ya girl!!!!! lol 😉 )

Geek out w/ me for a min, what superhero powers would you have & why?

Telaportation would be cool. I could save money on flights and avoid the TSA gropings. Telekinesis would come in handy too. Especially when I’m in couch potato mode.

Which photographer would you love to shoot with and why?

I’d love to shoot with Kareem Black.  He’s dope.  He has a different perspective from the styles I’ve been shooting lately.  He’s also originally from my hometown so hopefully we can make that happen soon!

Tell me a little about your favorite shoot, photographer or model you have worked with …

I’ve shot with a lot of awesome photographers but it’s no secret my favorite is Nick Saglimbeni.  He really helped me push myself to the next level.  My Mojave Desert shoot with him for SHOWCase is my favorite published shoot.  We also shot a crazy out there chapter for his book SlickforceGirl.  When it comes out it will be evident why it was one of the best shoots of my life.

As far as models go it would be easier to point out who I didn’t enjoy working with only because the majority of girls I’ve encountered are pretty dope. But the girls I enjoy working with the most are Brooke Bailey, Tae Heckard, Rosa Acosta, and Summer Walker.

What are your passions outside of modeling?

I enjoy sci-fi and fantasy movies, books, comics, and culture in general. I also love traveling, cooking and baking, horseback riding, reading, and bowling.

What makes you stand out against other models in the industry?

I don’t take myself too seriously.  I don’t bombard my followers on twitter with the “look how hot I am unphotoshopped” picture show.  You might get one today, a professional pic tomorrow, but the next day it might be a pic of a Yoda lunchbox.  I’m not on some quest to make people believe I’m hot.  You either think so or you don’t.  Either way I still work, and I work a lot.  So I have the luxury of being able to relax and have fun with it.

Working behind the scenes in different capacities in the entertainment industry has also equipped me with a different attitude than most models.  It’s recognized in me by my peers.  My opinion is often sought out by photographers , editors, and other creative for projects I’m not even a part of. I feel like I’m bragging.  Yeah.  But it’s cool to have your views and voice valued in an industry where you are expected to be no more than a glorified, glamorous prop. (memecherry note: amen sista girl!!  One of the many reasons why I look up to you, you are more than just a big booty and a pretty face…  You have an amazingly creative, business savvy, intelligent AND wise way about you…  That is why your name is not one that will soon be forgotten…)

What is your definition of sexy?

Sexy is just being comfortable in your own skin. Imperfections and all.

What do you like to wear when you want to feel sexy?

I love Egyptian cotton sheets, cashmere socks, Cosa Bella lingerie. If I feel comfy, I feel sexy.

Look out for my new campaign and products with DGK.  A skateboard & apparel company.  It’s my favorite collab so far because I was involved creatively from start to finish and it looks great!

My new website will be up in January. It’s going to be simple with a few surprises. I can’t wait to share it with you!

I want to say thank you to anyone who took time to read this.  Models are so often seen and not heard.
